In 1963, American writer and lecturer Thich Nhat Hanh coined the saying; We are here to awaken from our illusion. However, what does that mean? How can we accomplish such a thing? Being mindful of how we act is an integral part of mindfulness; it encourages us to be more compassionate and empathetic toward others.
For instance, if anyone tries to cut me off since I am driving, I can allow myself to become angry or upset with them, or I can take a deep breath and forgive them for their mistake. Suppose I allow myself to hold onto anger and resentment over small matters. In that case, I will have negative feelings inside me. If I choose not only to let go but also move forward positively, then there will be peace inside me at all times.
According to research by Harvard University professor Michael Porter and colleagues, being the change means that each person can directly impact health outcomes. An individual’s behaviour accounts for up to 20 percent of healthcare costs—an amount more significant than any other single factor—so it makes sense that people can take action to improve their health at little or no cost.
For example, being more physically active, adopting healthy eating habits and quitting smoking are just a few changes that will immediately benefit your overall health. After all, there’s no better motivation than that!
Don’t forget about emotional well-being and physical activity when considering lifestyle factors. The effect of stress on weight gain is incredibly complicated and perhaps even counterintuitive: Stress can lead to unhealthy behaviors such as overeating high-calorie foods out of comfort and skipping workouts because they’re so tricky; stress also elevates cortisol levels which contribute to fat storage.
However, studies show that exercise alleviates stress hormone levels, lowers anxiety and boosts self-esteem – critical factors for leading an overall healthier life.
