It’s important to keep in mind that zero is a number. It’s not a memory location because pointers can only hold memory locations. In addition, pointers keep track of memory locations that refer to something. Therefore, it’s not a good idea (and often illegal) to fill a pointer with an immediate value to look around in memory.

The 0 escape character is likely the element that causes the most confusion. This is the null character used to end a text string in C. The problem is that “\0” corresponds to the character value zero. You can use a zero directly to get the same result if you have the know-how. However, this does not imply that zero and NULL are associated, especially since NULL is one meaning of the word and “null character” is another.

Remember that using a zero value to end a string does not offend anyone; the 0 escape sequence allows you to specify it within a set of quotes. This may be necessary when a function requires a char value as input rather than an int.

History of C and Java Programming Language

James Gosling started Java as an ” Oak ” project in June 1991. Gosling set out to design a virtual machine and a language that were close to C but more uniform and simple than C/C++. In 1995, the first public implementation, Java 1.0, was released. Use of \0 in C language

In the C programming language, the character /0 called (NULL) indicates the end of a string or a character array. When a string is defined in C, the string’s terminating character is always 0 by default. 

This character is beneficial in C because it can be used to solve many problems such as finding the length of a string without the use of a library function (strlen()), concatenating two strings without the use of a library function (strcat()), comparing two strings without the use of a library function (strcmp()), and so on. In addition, the 0 is the only character that can decide the end of a string as a condition.

A string is stored in C as an array of characters, and the array you declare may need to be larger than the actual string stored. When working with a string, you’ll need a way to tell where the end of the string is since the end of the string doesn’t have to take up the entire array. Apart from that, /0 can be manually used in character arrays to indicate the end of the array.

Use of \0 in Java

It is not much different from C. When you write a string, you’re writing an array of char data types that the compiler will convert to ASCII values (which have a corresponding decimal number value). Null is the idea and representation that an object has yet to be defined/set to a meaningful value, whereas ‘0’ is for characters.

Use of C language in real life
